At Picosa Ink, we use only sterile hollow needles and flatback jewelry for a safer, smoother piercing experience. Hollow needles create cleaner piercings with less trauma to the skin, while flatbacks offer a comfortable, irritation-free healing process, especially for sensitive areas.

aftercare

Helpful hints for piercing care.

Keep your body happy, keep your piercing happy

The fastest way to support your healing piercing? Take care of you. Stay hydrated, eat well, rest up, and manage stress. A healthy body means a healthier, faster-healing piercing.

Hands off (unless they’re clean)

Your hands carry bacteria, and touching your piercing with dirty fingers can cause irritation or infection. Always wash your hands first—and skip the twisting or turning. Let your piercing do its thing.

Check your jewelry (but only with clean hands)

If your jewelry has screw-on ends, check them regularly to make sure they’re secure. Always do this with freshly washed hands.

Keep it in

During the healing process, your jewelry needs to stay put. Once healed, feel free to change it, but avoid leaving the piercing empty for long periods. If you need to swap jewelry temporarily, ask us about discreet, non-metal alternatives.

Keep mouths and fluids away

Healing piercings are open wounds—treat them that way. Avoid kissing, oral contact, and sharing drinks or utensils until fully healed. Even if you're close, your partner’s bacteria is still different from yours.

Dress for healing

Avoid tight or restrictive clothing that presses on your piercing. Stick to natural fibers like cotton to let your skin breathe, and keep anything that touches the area clean—including your sheets, bras, and workout gear.

Mind the extras

Be careful with makeup, hairspray, sunscreen, and hair products around healing piercings. Clean your phone, glasses, and anything else that comes into contact with the area.

Adjust your sleep

For ear and cartilage piercings, try sleeping on the opposite side or use a donut-shaped pillow to avoid pressure. Stay off your stomach for healing belly piercings.

Keep pets at a distance

We love them, but pets and fresh piercings don’t mix. Keep your furry friends—and their hair, paws, and tongues—away from healing areas.

Be picky about pools and beaches

Swimming is best avoided during the full healing period. If you must swim, wait at least three months and clean your piercing thoroughly afterward. Avoid questionable water sources like hot tubs, lakes, or unknown pools altogether.

Jewelry Downsizing

  • 01.

At first, your jewelry will appear longer than normal—this is intentional as it allows for swelling during the healing process.

  • 02.

During the first few weeks of healing, your piercing will swell and adjust to fit the size of your jewelry.

  • 03.

Once the swelling has gone down, if the jewelry is still too long, a more snug-fitting style should be inserted into the piercing.

  • FAILURE TO DOWNSIZE.

If the original jewelry is left in too long, the piercing might shift and heal at an angle different from the initial piercing. Migration and scarring may also occur.
